Museum Dream Big PS 49 Afterschool Program Performance and Art Exhibition at the Mall at Bay Plaza!
Since January, Bronx Children’s Museum’s teaching artists, Natalie Wood and Ricardo Luss Nigaglioni, along with special guest-artist Bobby Sanabria, introduced second graders at P.S 49 to the history of Afro Latin Jazz and dance. The Dream Big Afterschool program encouraged students to express themselves through the visual arts and original poetry which they transformed into songs. The students learned about the musical roots of African, Cuban, and Latin Jazz and explored the sounds of percussion instruments like the congas “tumbadora,” bongos, and timbales. The Bronx–born son of Puerto Rican parents, Mr. Sanabria specializes in Latin Jazz music. On May 28, the students got to showcase all they learned in a performance and exhibition at the Mall at Bay Plaza. Special thanks to Mr. Burke and Mr. Hernandez of PS 49.
Funding provided by NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (Cultural Immigrant Initiative) through NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and the Pinkerton Foundation. Without the Pinkerton Foundation, there would be no afterschool arts programming for children in the 2nd Grade at PS 49.
