The Kids of the Bronx Triumph: Equal Access to Culture and the Arts for the children in the borough is just two years away! The Bronx Children's Museum is proud to announce that the New York City Council, spearheaded by Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and City Councilmember Vanessa Gibson with support from the Bronx City Council Delegation and City Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer, has allocated the remaining $1.7 million needed to complete the construction of the Kids' Powerhouse Discovery Center, the Museum's new facility in the South Bronx. The Powerhouse building is owned by New York City and maintained by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. "This, together with the $2 million recently allocated in March to the Museum by the borough's State Assembly Delegation under the leadership of Speaker Carl Heastie and with the support of Assemblymembers Latoya Joyner and Jeffrey Dinowitz, stands as a major coup for the Bronx," said Executive Director Carla Precht. "While we will continue to fundraise for our operating costs and exhibits, we can rest assured that our space will be gorgeous and worthy of our Bronx children." "We thank the City of New York under the leadership of Mayor Bill de Blasio, the City Council under the leadership of Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, the Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., the NYS Assembly under the leadership of Speaker Carl Heastie and all of our champions including the NYC Department of Design and Construction for their support of this important project. The children of the Bronx triumphed last Friday thanks to our City and State leadership." "As icing on the cake, we were also allocated repeat discretionary expense funding from New York City Council Speaker Mark-Viverito and our local City Councilmember Gibson as well as the Bronx City Council Delegation and City Councilmembers Palma and Torres." "The children of the Bronx are now only steps away from having equal access to what children in the other boroughs have and cherish-a cultural facility designed just for them," said Hope Harley, Board President since 2007.
